Waxing on the wane

Graphic by ©2002
Used with permission
Administrators are concerned that librarians are refusing to remove visible body hair. However, patrons are more tolerant, choosing to respect the librarian's individual rights not to conform to overly prescriptive dress standards ....

WLW RESEARCH COLUMN
Animals in Libraries
Google produces 742,000 hits for "cat +library", but only 16,700 for "giraffe +library". Although not all hits were examined, this does appear to support the premliminary hypothesis that there are more feline library residents than giraffes. Unexpected results include the fact that there were over 132,000 results returned for the query "elephant +library". You wouldn't think there would be that many libraries with enlarged entry and exit points ...

SCREAMING MEDIA
Dramatic librarians perform
The Sydney Morning Herald Online reveals that librarians are just as capable of producing a major theatrical flop as the professionals. Their production of MacBeth features costuming by St Vincent de Paul, and sets purchased out of library budget surpluses ... click here.

SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION
Biblia nominated for award
Biblia's alter ego, Amanda Credaro, has been nominated for the prestigious Global SchoolNet Award. This award is to recognise contribution to online learning, and requires testimonials. Sheesh! MORE ORIGINAL HUMOUR
Laugh yourself comatose.
No, folks, WLW isn't just yet another directory of humor. The Humor Index contains over 60 original humor items by Biblia - except for one guest item, exclusive to WLW. Oh, and one well-known piece off the 'net that people expect to see on any library humor site. But the rest is original. Honest. Use the new improved index! Now in alphabetical order, even. Click here for the US version or here for the English version or at the bottom of this page for those with a sinking feeling, or at the top left hand side, or ....

SO WHAT'S NEW?
Libraries Unlimited is now gearing up to produce the print version of Warrior Librarian Weekly, due for release later this year. They also have other books, so you can further reduce your budget surplus in one easy order. Your Finance Branch will appreciate the reduced paperwork!

IN THE NEWS:
The Shrinking Internet:
Free websites reported as disappearing, as the old "bait and switch" technique finds a digital context. Just consolidation, or have people returned to books?

Refugee Support:
Biblia sends culled web sites to help in formation of foundation collection for library on Island of Bompi.

BOOK FEATURE
The Idiot's Guide to Attack Hummingbird Training
No review available - our reviewer tried it at home.

Does speed matter?:
The upcoming installation of Internet2 will mean you can get 30 times as many pop-up advertisements in the same time period as it currently takes one to infiltrate your desktop. The Warrior Librarian is alone in thinking this is NOT a good thing.
