PUBLISHING
Eureka sets new record
Eureka Productions publisher Tom Pomplun has not only released the Graphic Classics Volume Twelve, he has also sent three, yes three (!) of the company's publication for review by the Warrior Librarian Review Panel. This beats the previous record of two copies by an amazing 50%.
Although labelled as multi-author, each of the volumes features the work of classic authors, anthologized, and illustrated by some of the most famous names in graphics illustrations. Volume 11 was dedicated to the work of O. Henry, whilst Volume 12 (Adventure Classics) covers the work of Runyon, Dumas and others.
The work of Australian graphic artists Anton Emdin and Neale Blanden, plus New Zealander Roger Langridge, features in a number of these collections. Which is sort of nice, considering the wide range of illustrative styles that seem to complement the different themes developed by individual authors.
Which will leave catalogers in something of a quandary - do these belong in Fiction, Literature, or Fine Arts? Not that it matters too much - librarians will probably put them in a non-standard location anyway ...

READING PROMOTION
Request fulfilled?
The brave Australian speakers' agency Booked Out, which specializes in author visits, has invited the Warrior Librarian Nitpicking Division to comment on their revamped website.
Booked Out's Lauris Pandolfini referred to the Warrior Librarian as 'Angela', then compounded the ignominy by calling Warrior Librarian Weekly - a 300+ page, multi-award winning website - a newsletter.
Lois notes that their associated online bookstore offers a 10% discount on their authors' books to ensure that children attending talks by their authors are able to purchase the books. No gratuities were offered to this publication. Which could be seen as either a Good Thing or a Bad Thing, depending on one's particular viewpoint.
A nice graphic on your instrument, Leonie. And don't worry about the gaffs - this publication does not stand on ceremony. Much. ....

LIBARY AWARDS
Donnybrook Public wins again
World-famous Donnybrook Public Library (DPL) can add another certificate to their ever increasing collection on the noticebaord out in the lunch room.
The 2005 inaugural winner of the Gayle Thompson/Library Newsletter award for Library Innovation, the new DPL Library Outreach building was judged to have met the local building standards and have a minimalist impact on the surrounding landscape.
DPL Director, Lance Link also points out it was the only entrant in the competition that did not exceed their building program budget ...

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INSTRUCTION
Irrelevance not a barrier
Bert Washington (not the person pictured), Information Manager for ECO Animal Health, is on a quest for further documents such as the Warrior Librarian Guide for bibliographic instruction.
Although a Google search did not result in a suitable graphic to accompany this article, there were lots of cutesy animal pictures that might appeal to some WLW readers.
Whilst some might question the relevance of this to anything else, a spokesperson for the WLW Editorial Panel stated that relevance was apparently not a primary requirement for anything to do with libraries, librarians, or any associated issues ...

LANGUAGE AND LITERACY
Yeah, right ...
As Oklahoma opens its newest adult literacy center in McAlester, around the 'western world' similar centers are operating, under construction, or in the planning stages.
Which seems really strange, considering the officially published figures for the US, UK, Australia and many other countries - all claiming to have 100% literacy, or close to it.
As the famous Simpson's quote states, "Me not pass English? Unpossible" ...

| WLW ORIGINAL LIBRARY HUMOR |
MORE ORIGINAL HUMOR
Laugh yourself comatose
Research has shown that the average librarian will take 10 to 15 minutes to read this web page. Anecdotal evidence suggests that many librarians fear they do not have enough time to investigate the humor links. The majority of the 110+ original library humor items (all written by Biblia, and not available anywhere else on the 'net) in the Humor Index are designed to take less than 2 minutes to read.
However, if you choose to hang around there for hours reading them all, then re-reading them, then WLW cannot take any responsibility. You now have the choice of using the genetically unmodified Alphabetical Index or the dolphin-safe Dewey Version. Caffeine-free version has been temporarily canned, pending an FDA investigation ...

This issue of Warrior Librarian Weekly breaks new ground, yet again.
Although some periodicals occasionally run late with their deadlines for publication, we have once again rejected the mores of mainstream publishing, and brought this weekly publication to you a month late.
Not any 'flash in the pan' event - this is the second time this year we have managed this feat. Indications seem to be that we will probably be able to continue this pattern for some time to come.
However, as a bonus to our readers, you can now access the pdf (45.5kb) of the new Warrior Librarian Guide to Safe Reading by clicking here ...

Can't find it on Google?
A website with a difference - it doesn't pretend to know anything or have any information; cantfindongoogle.com is refreshingly honest, if somewhat counterproductive.
It also allows futurists a glimpse of what the average library's Reference Desk will become if short-sighted administrators are successful in replacing information professionals with computers, based on the false premise that "everything is on the Internet" (except they probably don't know that the word "Internet" is a proper noun, and thus merits a capital letter) ...

Empty cardboard boxes. Squash them up and recycle them? Recycle them by packing books or equipment into them? Paint them and display them as objects d'art? There seems to be no end of uses for them. But aren't they boring?!!! Nowhere near as much fun as bubble-wrap.
Perhaps somewhere out there is a website on having fun with cardboard boxes. Although if you were the Limerick housewife who won AUD$125 million, I guess this wouldn't be high on your priority list ...
All of which has very little to do with the Day Job; have now moved off metadata tagging, and into the highly challenging (although no better paid) realm of constructing Flash animations for instruction in the use of graphing calculators. Who would have thought back during the Library School days ...
