CHEERFUL NEWS FROM M.EAST
Books talk
World Book and Copyright Day was celebrated at Al Yasmin International School (Riyadh), in a spectacularly unique fashion.
In addition to a book reading by a prominent local politician and an extensive display of books, librarian Rajesh Mishra also expressed his view on the importance of reading and how reading can be helpful in forming a good a character of a student. The whole morning's assembly was devoted to the speech, and was followed by an essay competition!
It is not known at this stage whether or not Mr Mishra had sent the 2000 word report and 20 MB of accompanying pictures to this publication in error ...

TECHNOLOGY
New law may limit access
The Delete Online Predators Act (DOPA) will require that "social networking sites and chat rooms be inaccessible to minors from computers in public libraries and schools", according to news sources.
American Library Association president Leslie Burger stated that the " ... this unnecessary and overly broad legislation will hinder students' ability to engage in distance learning and block library computer users from accessing a wide array of essential Internet applications including instant messaging, email, wikis and blogs. Under DOPA, people who use library and school computers as their primary conduits to the Internet will be unfairly blocked from accessing some of the web's most powerful emerging technologies and learning applications."
Thankfully for many students, pirated music downloads together with games cheat sites, plus online dating and the ever popular assessable task 'sample papers' will not be affected ...

INTERNATIONAL CELEBRATIONS
On the other hand ...
The gloves seem to be off when it comes to celebrations of special interest groups. With only days to go until International Left Handers Day, the official website bemoans having to "...fit in with home and office layouts designed for right-handers’ comfort – put up with doors, cookers, sinks, computer mice, keyboards and desks that are efficient for right-handers to work at, and hundreds of times every day we contort ourselves using back-to-front tools and gadgets that make us look clumsy and awkward in our efforts to make them to work".
But what about Reference Librarians who continually get struck with questions out of the Left Field? Or those who score the Left Right Out position in decision making? Not to mention anyone with Left Wing tendencies who, through no fault of their own, find themselves laboring in a conservative bureaucracy?
Has there been any consideration of those food scraps derogatorily labelled 'left-overs', despite the existence of those scrumptious crispy bits of baked vegies left stuck on the aluminium foil ...

CENSORSHIP
Danish poster fails to offend
Non-controversial Danish website Kostenlose Bibliothek der Downloads has released its Librarian poster, which as so far escaped mainstream media attention.
Sources that prefer to remain unnamed are claiming the use of Danish language as a cheap trick to avoid p*rn filters. However, the site also provides Informationen und Publikationen des VFM eV, which perhaps could also be viewed as very bad keyboarding by people with limited foreign language skills.
Now how crafty is that? ...

INFORMATION DISSEMINATION
Government documents made available
More than 1000 state public servants were emailed an intranet link in order to provide access to documents and presentations that were produced in and for workshops conducted since 1998.
At the time of going to press, no reviews of the 'online library' were available. It appears that no one who actually accessed the material was prepared to publicly admit it ...

| WLW ORIGINAL LIBRARY HUMOR |
MORE ORIGINAL HUMOR
Laugh yourself comatose
Research has shown that the average librarian will take 10 to 15 minutes to read this web page. Anecdotal evidence suggests that many librarians fear they do not have enough time to investigate the humor links. The majority of the 110+ original library humor items (all written by Biblia, and not available anywhere else on the 'net) in the Humor Index are designed to take less than 2 minutes to read.
However, if you choose to hang around there for hours reading them all, then re-reading them, then WLW cannot take any responsibility. You now have the choice of using the genetically unmodified Alphabetical Index or the dolphin-safe Dewey Version. Caffeine-free version has been temporarily canned, pending an FDA investigation ...

It seems that the use of jargon and verbosity are viewed as lending a patina of authority to just about any piece of dross that has sufficient funding to employ the services of a competent writer with good vocabulary skills, or at least access to credible thesauri.
Select any policy document at random, and see if this isn't true. There are very few where 100 words couldn't be edited down to maybe 10. Or possibly even 9. It'd be an interesting exercise to start at a set fee, provide an outline of what's required in the final document, then deduct a dollar for every word.
I wonder if this idea has been patented?

Don't say you don't have enough time. You have exactly the same number of
hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo,
Mother Theresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.

Dear Your Warriorship,
Thank you for your site. It is agreeably wierd.
My parents are librarians who met in a public library.
My kids hate to read. I don't have grandchildren yet.
My dog ate a book I hadn't read yet, but I don't think I really wanted to read it anyway. I am trying to teach her German, but she is a slow learner.
Is there a vitamin or supplement I should take?
- Tom H. in New Mexico (yes there's a new one)

Here's one that'll have you blowing coffee out of your nostrils in no time flat. For users of Ask a Librarian type services, Ask a Ninja will help with ideas for some good questions, and actual librarians might pick up some great responses to really groan-wrenching, eyeball rolling stumpers.
