WEB 2.1: NO BLOG LEFT BEHIND
"Obnoxious Librarian from Hades" tells all

Obnoxious Librarian from Hades Dennie Heye, a corporate librarian from the Netherlands and regular WLW reader, has been so inspired by many of WLW articles, that he's launched his own blog. It's is a pretty good read, in that cringey Know-what-you-mean-pal sort of way.

Heye states that his blog is "50% based on my own experiences, 45% imagination and 10% caffeine".

"The title actually came to me during a library panel discussion while I was bored... it just came to me out of the blue. So I owe a certain vendor with a 64-slide presentation (which he crammed into 25 min) something for the inspiration.".

Seeking to double his readership, WLW is proud to have made his dreams come true. The Warrior Librarian became the second person to visit his website. We've been where you are, Dennie. Not the Netherlands or anything, just in cyberspace, looking for readers ...

REVIEWING TOOLS
When one critic is not enough

Panel discussion Just when one of the best web tools for librarians has been discovered, the latest news on the Metacritic website is that their "regular coverage of Books has concluded with the final Harry Potter instalment".

Typical, isn't it? Searchable, sortable, extensive, highly authoritative, current, and all that stuff library folk keep banging on about. So it had to go, right? Another one that can be chalked up to the Anti-Library lobbies?

Sure, the Metacritic webmaster has added a nice little recommendation to check out their 'friends' at The Complete Review, but they don't have the same quantity of data. How's 65 reviews of just the latest Harry Potter for a start? The Review doesn't do the white writing on a dark background either, so it can't possibly be as good as Metacritic.

This publication recommends that Stern Letters of Protest should be immediately written to anyone who cares (now that's a challenge in itself - finding someone who cares, that is) ...

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Academic library threatens to issue invitation

Macquarie University Library As consolation for the rejection by the Internet Librarian 2007 conference (to appear as a special guest speaker if all expenses were paid), The Warrior Librarian received an invitation to speak at MULLIT.

Macquarie University Library and Information Trainees [MULLIT] who are undertaking study programs originally formed the group, which has now expanded to include any staff member studying.

Loosely scheduled for November, the topic is to be 'breaking down the barriers' with a focus on working across the sectors and the 'invisible barriers' that seem to exist between academic, school, public and corporate library staff.

The invitation concludes with " ... I will leave with the hope that you will consider this as an opportunity to share your stories with our staff. . Probably not a view shared by the everyone ...

ANTIQUARIAN BOOKS
Rubbery facts

World's oldest known book made with movable type Many thanks to Ben Vershbow for bringing our attention to the fact that Guttenburg didn't actually 'invent' (or be the first to use) movable type to produce a book.

Published at if:book, a project of the Institute of Future of the Book, Venshbow states "This is the oldest existing document in the world printed with metal movable type: an anthology of Zen teachings, Goryeo Dynasty, Korea... 1377. It's a little known fact, at least in the West, that movable type was first developed in Korea circa 1230, over 200 years before that goldsmith from Mainz came on the scene. I saw this today in the National Library of Korea in Seoul (more on that soon). This book is actually a reproduction. The original resides in Paris and is the subject of a bitter dispute between the French and Korean governments".

So that looks like yet another lousy 'fact' we'll have to change in all our notes, references, displays, books, journal writings, chatty little comments at informal events, where we desparately scramble to show how valuable we are to the community so we don't have to keep justifying our existance and the importance of the work we do so we can maintain at least subsistance budgets and staffing levels above Officially Pathetic. Although we may have digressed a little bit here ...

EQUITY AND INCLUSIVENESS
Bovine Americans milked

Cows protesting According to the Decatur Tribune, Illinois libraries will be showcased at the Aug. 28-30 Farm Progress Show.

With the theme "Think Outside the Barn @ Your Library, Central Illinois librarians, under the sponsorship of Rolling Prairie Library System, will be running promotional activities that will include drawings for prizes such as a custom designed “Book and Barn” quilt."

Libraries across Central Illinois will also bring the “Think Outside the Barn@ Your Library” theme into their local communities through the use of yard signs and other promotional materials to emphasize the importance of rural libraries beyond the time frame of the Farm Progress Show. And presumably beyond their regular patrons.

Although it would clearly not have been politically correct to have asked the protesters (pictured) details of their beef, it seems that they did indeed get their message down pat ...

WLW ORIGINAL LIBRARY HUMOR

MORE ORIGINAL HUMOR
Laugh yourself comatose

WLW Reader laughing Research has shown that the average librarian will take 10 to 15 minutes to read this web page. Anecdotal evidence suggests that many librarians fear they do not have enough time to investigate the humor links. The majority of the 110+ original library humor items (all written by Biblia, and not available anywhere else on the 'net) in the Humor Index are designed to take less than 2 minutes to read.

However, if you choose to hang around there for hours reading them all, then re-reading them, then WLW cannot take any responsibility. You now have the choice of using the genetically unmodified Alphabetical Index or the dolphin-safe Dewey Version. Caffeine-free version has been temporarily canned, pending an FDA investigation ...

EDITORIAL SOAPBOX

Amanda Credaro in the Warrior Librarian Offical Costume V23 It's been an 'interesting' time since the last edition; many things have happened - but many other things have refused to change (yet), despite the best efforts of so many.

It could not be put more succinctly than the statement of fact by Balbraith who said "Faced with the choice between changing one's mind and proving that there is no need to do so, almost everyone gets busy on the proof" ...

CELEBRATIONS
Bookweek 2007

Congratulations to the Children's Book Council of Australia for yet another brilliant effort! There can be no better way for (most) schools to celebrate the major event of the Book Calendar year than to host events that foster a love of reading, an appreciation of literature, to provide an atmosphere of joyous literary community, to promote the library to those who might be reluctant to use it or have had a previous bad experience ...

DIVERSION OF THE MOMENT

Escape from the Library According to Daily Free Games, Escape Library is "totally addicting puzzle game fun."

Apparently you have to find a way to escape the library using different items you find inside the room, but as we seem to have killed the Official WLW Mouse, it's a bit hard to tell how good this might be. It's a complete pain on a laptop with a touch pad, if that's any help ...

MEMORABLE QUOTES

Loud mouth Corporations like IBM have learned that today's heretic - the one with the courage, the tenacity and the brash conviction to question the way things are "spozed to be" - often turns out to be a prophet of sorts.

SIC CORRESPONDENCE

notepaper Good morning Mrs Credaro,
I'm sorry to bother you and my bad english, too. I don't know how to begin this letter. I've got a big problem and I don't know how to work it out. I am not able to give up the expectation and I'm taking courage to seize even an extreme solution like this one.

Actually, it all started alreay in my childhood; it was a combination of several unlucky circumstances which have been following me throughout my life so far and I am not successful at all.

There's a lot to say about it. It's hard to quality the ill influence of the parents, or shal I judge the teacher who didn't enable me to study at high school (intermediate) for some unknown reasons? It stigmatized the rest of my life. These are things one can barely (if at all) influence...

...I feel a strong need study of physics and rightfulness this universe, too, and I need to pass my experience on to the others. The problem is that there's only an evanescent chance that I will succeed and one day will do what I wish for. It's a long story. I've got an incredible "weakness" for theoretical, quantal and particle physics, cosmology and other guestions concerned. I would try about to explanation of wave-particle duality, anomaly behaviour of photons and use of transient waves in optical etc. I could apply my imaginativeness in science experiment, been very help for me. Behaviour of me is probably different, so I have troubles with most peoples ...

... I am a bit slower in the common life, but I can think about demeanour of fundamental particles, about all universe and future of the mankind. Using "differend" kind of mind would very help me. I don't know exactly what it is; I need to think of "physics essence this world", but in my country there is just an evanescent chance to find use in this branch. Maybe you could help me save my life and now I don't mean only the biological one, but the mental life, too. If you can help me financially, it will be great support to me. I need gather approximately 40 000 dollar (8 000 for a year) for a "survive". There's the number of account [omitted here in case this is genuine].

And something to characterize me?: Among my favourite book fall Feynmans' Lectures of Physics and I'm also very interest The New Quantum Universe (Tony Hey, Patrick Walters). From of music I like Song for Ireland of Phil Colclough and musics of Alan Silvestri and James Horner. It might be unusual and incomprehensible, but such I am. I'm sorry to my boldness, but I am not able manage it without help. Thank you very much for understanding. I wish you lucky and pleased life Petr Vaca -Czech republic.
