Note: The opinions expressed herein are solely those of the author. Any resemblance to real librarians (living or dead, or somewhere in between) or real libraries, may be a coincidence - but probably not.

Biblia, the Warrior Librarian, was created by A.B.Credaro. The practice of Warrior Librarianship is common, and therefore quite possibly in the public domain. As such, it is likely to be exempt from any copyright restrictions. However, this does not limit Warrior Librarian Weekly, its agents, employees, heirs, spouses, family pets, or others connected with the zine, from trying to make an easy buck from its use.

Universal permission is granted to any website to create a link to any page on this site. Notification of such links is appreciated, but not mandatory. In other words, this would be nice, but you don't have to.

All material on this site was written by A.B. Credaro unless otherwize stated. Requests for permission to publish or circulate any content should be directed to same.

Library Management Mania

pushed over the brink Citing the overdue books, returned material that was never borrowed, resources found in trash cans and the loss of 150 books in one year, as contributing to "making her crazy", one library media specialist may be able to find the answer to (almost) all of her problems.

By accessing the free online Wikipedia from her middle school library, she - like anyone else with the same problems - can now access the 'brass tacks' of library administration - presented in one concise paragraph.

Library schools, and publishers of library school textbooks, at this stage have not commented on the possible revenue and staff losses that might result from such information being given away through the Internet ....

Realia storage issues

Difficult Realia Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the stacks, another problem rears its ugly head. And tail.

Although most artifacts have the common decency to be completely stationary, and more than happy to be encapsulated and displayed, there is always something unpleasant waiting in the dark recesses of Technical Services. And with any luck, it won't smell. But then again, it depends on the size of the backlog.

At the time of going to press, there was no statement from OCLC, or LC, on whether semi-decaying material should be preserved in the condition of existence at the time of cataloging, or described in terms of the predicted eventual state. This is one problem that can't be fixed with tape or library glue ...

Belated recognition for retired adminstrator

Ruth gets award Former Director of the Neligh Public Library, Ruth Strassler, (pictured with John Dale of Lincoln City Libraries NE) was recently presented with an award for her chairmanship of the library accreditation and guidelines committee for Nebraska Libraries.

But it's not like anyone said thank you for all the unpaid hours she put at the library after closing time before her retirement, or even considered the amount of her own time she put in when travelling across the country to visit the grandkids and stopped off at bookstores to see what was new. Or the Sunday mornings she spent reading book reviews in the newspapers she bought with her own money.

Fercryingoutloud, the woman drove across three states to get a book autographed by the Warrior Librarian. But at least she got a nice dinner ...

WLW RESEARCH COLUMN

Searching for information Having now finished the Blaire Fossil Project, and spending last week photographing mineral crystals from the (NSW) Department of Mineral Resource's reference collection, the WLW research team is now gearing up for the creation of the Math's Glossary pronunciation (pro·nun·ci·a·tion )audio files.

Whoever still thinks librarians just "stamp books and shush people" really have no idea how complex our work is.

WLW Reader

Research has shown that the average librarian will take 5-10 minutes to read this web page. Anecdotal evidence is suggesting that many librarians fear they do not have enough time to investigate the humor links. The majority of the 90+ original library humor items in the Humor Index are designed to take less than 2 minutes to read.

However, if you choose to hang around there for hours reading them all, then re-reading them, then WLW cannot take any responsibility. You now have the choice of using the genetically unmodified Alphabetical Index or the dolphin-safe Dewey Version. Caffeine-free version has been temporarily canned, pending an FDA investigation ...

SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION

MASS MEDIA: The Newcastle (Australia) Herald published a book review of Biblia's Guide a few weeks ago. Variety has yet to cover this seminal work of post-modern deconstructivism ...

CONFERENCES Biblia's next conference appearance is scheduled on June 29, 2004 for the School Library Association of Queensland. Members and friends of MEMO can click here for the report on the Fargo conference.

ACADEMIA: Recently discovered was the fact that both the Warrior Librarian and this website have been included in the course material for the Information Literacy e-course IST 4117. We wrote to them on September 14, asking for a copy of the course notes, but haven't heard anything back yet ...

INTERNET: For some reason, Warrior Librarian Weekly has now been listed in Steven Carr's Ultimate Guide to Education Resources.

AMAZON BOOK SALES: has slipped slightly from last week's sales ranking of 55,122 to 70,661 this week. Strangely, the Amazon link to "explore similar items" delivers Harry Potter 5. Rowling must be thrilled ...

FROM THE MAILBOX: Thanks to (non-librarian) Maria who emailed in admiration of Biblia's web content, and asked if we could email her back instructions on how she can emulate such a site. Our response was a suggestion that she visit her library and get a book on webpage construction. To which her response was "I'll get back to you". Yeah, right ...

Can you believe that its only 7 weeks to Christmas? It's time to start hunting through the bookshops for 'just the right present' for that special person in your life. In times like this, the service provided by Amazon becomes invaluable, particularly their facility. Now there's no more guessing about 'do they have this' or 'would they like that'.

Or if you're looking for a non-book gift for a library-associate, why not check out some of the brilliant libraria available through specialist online stores? Particularly at the moment when they are offering discounts for the holiday season ...

INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY
NEWS BLOG

Turning up in a Health e-newspaper was an article on information overload, with a proposed solution for handling it. Would have been much more valuable if there was a proposed solution as to how to raise the money to actually buy some of it ...

Still on the health soap box, from Australia is the news of a new report released last week by the Australian Psychological Society on Email Stress. The WLW research team disagrees with the findings - its just lack of time to deal with the emails that is causing the problem. Some employers seem to expect their workers to actually complete some work. Occassionally ...

A recent survey of cell phones in libraries revealed that West Coasters are more likely to turn them off (or switch to another type of alert system) than other US regions. Not that you'd notice or anything ...

Great news on the technology front on the use of tags to link customers to goods. Apparently, it could also be used in libraries ...

Best news of the week is that McDonalds and Starbucks intend "competing" with libraries in the provision of Internet services. Are we supposed to be worried? Let's see how they cope with greasy keyboards and food scraps in CD drives ...
