Note: The opinions expressed herein are solely those of the author. Any resemblance to real librarians (living or dead, or somewhere in between) or real libraries, may be a coincidence - but probably not.

Biblia, the Warrior Librarian, was created by A.B.Credaro. The practice of Warrior Librarianship is common, and therefore quite possibly in the public domain. As such, it is likely to be exempt from any copyright restrictions. However, this does not limit Warrior Librarian Weekly, its agents, employees, heirs, spouses, family pets, or others connected with the zine, from trying to make an easy buck from its use.

Internet now on disk

Internet on disk Alexa, an affiliate of Amazon.com, now offers "the entire Internet on disk", for a very reasonable price. With 500 Terabytes and expanding at a rate of 30 Terabytes per month, updates are completed every 60 days.

At this stage, there is no information on the size of the packages you will receive every two months. But all you'll have to do is network the discs into your LAN, and your library users will have access to the entire Internet.

Although the site content could now be up to several weeks old, at least you'll no longer have to maintain modems ...

Reading program "cracked"

Summer reading program Despite the best efforts of libraries to encourage patrons to use an ethical approach to all matters relating to information, there are apparently widening cracks in the approach.

Even our youngest techno-savy library users know that they can download 'hacks' or 'cracks' to convert free demonstration versions of multi-media games into full versions.

Whilst we continue to promote books and reading as a recreational activity, one 8 year old was heard to announce that she'd found the "cheat" for the reviewing form that was part of a local public library's Reading Program. "Nah ... you don't have to really read the book. The answer's on the back cover" ...

Library crime escalating

torn envelop Since the razing of the (original) Great Library of Alexandria, arson has been a problem for libraries. Seems like the full spectrum of crime, from graffiti to violence, has been with libraries ever since they were invented.

With increasingly more visible scrutiny by The Authorities, and legislation such as The Patriot Act, librarians are finding themselves walking on egg shells.

Even the opening of mail could result in an inadvertent violation of written instructions, and could be reported ...

Summer fashions for librarians

Library fashions 2004 Jean-Paul Gaultier delivered a stunning haute couture collection for next summer that was rich in ideas, providing the perfect example of why couture is both an art form and a fantasy world, as is the working life of the library profession.

In a touching tribute to Warrior Librarianship, the French designer offered 28 ensembles for spring-summer 2004. He was quite specific in stating that many of them had been inspired by traditional warriors.

With less cumbersome designs allowing for comfortable shelving in libraries without air conditioning, Gaultier also offered a sublime masculine suit in navy alpaca for daytime for male librarians. For a chic summer soiree behind the stacks, the Gaultier woman will be seen in full richly embroidered skirts or a rose velvet siren gown lined with shimmering green chiffon.

Hair styles should be in keeping with the outfits, with a less constrictive style encouraged ....

LIBRARY BUDGETS
Buying online

budget woes One of the greatest drains on collection development (apart from the actual costs) is dealing with book sellers. Although it's nice to get out once in a while to the local bookshop, who has the time? Or the energy? (Or the money?)

Online retailing may hold the key. Following The Scout Report's mention of Add AllBook search, the Warrior Librarian Finance Division investigated this further.

Add All book search allows a price comparison by US state. Interestingly, Biblia’s Guide in New York state is available from 26 alternative places of purchase, with prices varying from US$20 (+ $4.95 shipping) to $30.95 (+ $5.00 shipping).

A number of other online book purchasing services were also investigated, and may well become the next journal article in a regular print-type publication. Unfortunately, the Warrior Librarian Domestic Division is about 6 weeks behind in the ironing at this time ....

NOT ANOTHER BOOK REVIEW

online game Australian author Andy Griffiths' book "The day my bum went psycho" has been released in the US as "The day my butt went psycho". (Those keywords alone may be enough for some filtering software to block this site. We'd ask you to let us know if you are effected that way, but then you wouldn't be reading this part now.)

Griffiths' literary output, aimed at the teenage years, is noted as being highly successful with young males - due in a large part to the continuous mention of body emissions.

Publishers Scholastic have now included an online game on their Griffiths website, in addition to the news that the latest book "Zombie bums (or butts) from Uranus" will be released in the US in April this year ...

WLW RESEARCH COLUMN

Searching for information Towards the end of last year, this august journal (actually, at the moment it's a January journal, but why be picky?) conducted an online survey of WLW reader preferences.

Now the Rand Corporation has published a 118 page pdf document about how easy and quick online surveys are. With seven chapters, three appendices, and an extended literature review, it all seems to defeat the whole point of short, quick and cheap ...

WLW ORIGINAL LIBRARY HUMOR

MORE ORIGINAL HUMOR
Laugh yourself comatose

WLW Reader

Research has shown that the average librarian will take 15 to 20 minutes to read this web page. Anecdotal evidence is suggesting that many librarians fear they do not have enough time to investigate the humor links. The majority of the 90+ original library humor items (all written by Biblia, and not available anywhere else on the 'net) in the Humor Index are designed to take less than 2 minutes to read.

However, if you choose to hang around there for hours reading them all, then re-reading them, then WLW cannot take any responsibility. You now have the choice of using the genetically unmodified Alphabetical Index or the dolphin-safe Dewey Version. Caffeine-free version has been temporarily canned, pending an FDA investigation ...

SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION

MASS MEDIA: Yet again, there has been no coverage in any of the national papers on either Biblia or Warrior Librarian Weekly. Sheesh, even the Blacktown Sun and the Blacktown Advocate seem to be completely tied up with other stories ...

CONFERENCES Biblia's next conference appearance is scheduled on June 29, 2004 for the School Library Association of Queensland. Members and friends of MEMO can click here for the report on the Fargo conference.

ACADEMIA: The University of Texas at Arlington now lists this website on its page 'Websites for Professional Growth'...

INTERNET: Google now lists 'about' 1,830 hits for a search on the phrase "warrior librarian". Not that we check regularly or anything ....

FROM THE MAILBOX: There's been an interesting increase in the number of "bouncing" emails coming back to our mailbox - particularly as they weren't sent from here. When we find out who's spoofing our address to send p*orn*graphic spam, boy, are they in deep trouble ...

This week I was in my local public library (as a patron), and witnessed two youths walk out the door with ill-concealed 'bounty' - which incidently set off the stock control alarm. What would you have done in the same situation, as a 'visitor' to someone else's library?

Did my responsibility stop with drawing the event to the attention of the employed library staff? I was able to name the books they had taken (Excel study guides to the H.S.C., the major exit examination for secondary education in this state) but was unable to note the bar codes from 6 feet away ...

YOU HAVE TO LAUGH

UPDATE: Reported here last edition was the fact that the books and equipment of 6 British school libraries had been impounded. WLW readers will be glad to hear that the books have now been returned. At this stage there is no information as to the extent of the effect of the WLW coverage ...

Now we're getting library management advice from book reviewers. The Sydney Morning Herald's Ruth Wajnryb, in reviewing three books on language, states " ... In many ways, the world is not a conducive place for books: they are constantly under threat - through natural decomposition or disaster, or, more commonly, wilful destruction, through bombardment, fire, looting and pillaging. The ravages of deterioration and destruction are matched by those of a breed of librarians won't to cull for the sake of shelf space." [WLW emphasis] The email address for Letters to the Editor (for the Sydney Morning Herald) is ...

The council controlling the Herts (UK) libraries is to cut staff to create extra funding for "extended library hours, more resources and additional programs". What's wrong with this picture?

Would any multi-media collection be complete without the interactive CD on Malta's National Library, funded by UNESCO in the interests of promoting "science, culture and education"?

The series of three fires at the South Campbell Avenue Library reeked the expected havoc, but the method for loss assessment is a concern. Librarians are required to "sniff" the books identify those that were doused in petrol ...

The British Library was probably very lucky to have audio visual equipment stolen. It will be replaced under insurance. Had it been any of the irreplacable documents or historical tomes, which incidently would have been worth a lot more on the black market, although not as easy to sell through e-bay ...

In preparing for shipment to the Richard Nixon Presidential Library, the National Archives - after 30 years of safe-keeping - is packing up "more than 4,000 hours of surreptitious White House recordings, 46 million pages of documents, 500,000 photographs, and 30,000 presents given to the former president while he was in office", following changes in legislation. "We're not in the business of throwing things out here," National Archives spokeswoman Susan Cooper said ...

Will media giant and multi-millionaire Conrad Black's refusal to meet his pledge of US$100,000 to New York City Library result in having his borrowing rights suspended? And would he care ...

The Sun-Post noted today that of the 27 winners of the New York Times Librarian of the Year awards announced last December, none were from Minnesotta. Gee, how many states in the U.S. ...

It's been long enough since the announcement of the Caldecott and Newbery awards that they are no longer newsworthy, except for here ...

Is there any cause for concern about the appointment of the new director for India's National Library? News reports state that Sudhendu Mandal is a professor of biology, but neglects to mention the known health hazards of fungal growth in aging books. It was also alleged that during his tenure as a finance officer, he was “forced to go on leave for two months”. But in these days of budget restrictions, isn't 'creative accountancy' almost a critical skill. Maybe the fact that he has no experience in library administration could be a slight handicap ...
