AUTHORS
Rowling-Tolstoy link exposed

rowling Another urban legend was shattered when it was revealed that Joanne K.R. (or J.K. Rowling as she has come to be known) had not written the Harry Potter books while living in a cardboard box in a subway.

Whilst (Count) Leo Tolstoy specialized in writing with themes of poverty - notably from the comfort of his servant-maintained castle - the author of the Harry Potter series received a grant to finish the first of the HP series from the Scottish Arts Council, who thought she was writing the history of haggis ...

LIBRARY POLITICS
"Twins" brainstorm funding

politicians On the pretext of discussing the possibilities of mutually beneficial oil exploration and extraction, Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Californian Governor A. Schwarzenegger recently held several closed door meetings.

Schwarzenegger's revised May budget proposal to take $1.3 billion of revenue from local governments each year for the next two years is believed to hold a special appeal for Australian politicians, who are researching new ways to extract more money from tax payers.

The relatively recently introduced Goods and Services Tax (GST) reaped windfalls of billions of dollars - a very small percentage of which is being given back to selected taxpayers as a one-off grant, just a few months before the next elections. Some cynics are even suggesting there is a connection.

However, recent reports indicate that the Australian Federal government fears that libraries may shortly begin campaigning for a slice of the budget surplus ...

CHILDREN'S LITERATURE
Tootle controversy deepens

radio announcer Sydney radio announcer Mike Carlton will shortly return from "some leave", which occurred only days after he suggested that 1950 publication, Little Golden Books' "Tootle", was preferable to much of the available contemporary children's literature.

During the morning 2UE breakfast program, Calton also discussed a fire engine and unnamed tug boat from the LGB series. Well known for his controversial viewpoints and his willingness to engage in wars of words, there is speculation that the Australian Society of Authors may have made a formal complaint to the Australian Broadcasting Authority ...

READING PROMOTION
Dolly now expanding minds

dolly parton Country singer Dolly Parton has refused to join the ranks of other entertainers who have chosen to examine the possibilities of writing as a second career. Although Ms Parton began the Imagination Library Scheme in Tennessee back in 1995, she has recently managed to pursuade state authorities to match the funds that have been donated.

"This results in millions in additional funding so that all 95 counties in Tennessee can have an Imagination Library. That way, the estimated 375,000 children under five can have a new book delivered each month for free for mom and dad to read to them", a recent news item stated.

As yet, no comment has been made on the fact that if the funding went into school and public libraries, the children would have access to thousands of books - rather than 60 or so; books that would be selected by professionals on the basis of age-appropriateness and content-related themes ...

FROM THE WLW CORPORATE LIBRARY

sott'acqua From the darkest depths of Warrior Librarian Central's back room, the classic Sott'acqua e sotto vento, written by Icilio Felici will probably bring back many memories to a few WLW readers. (Our guess is very few.)

This is not a book that will appeal to everyone - particularly if they can't read Italian, although notably the page numbers at least are in English.

Translated courtesy of Alta Vista's Babel Fish, the book's title indicates that it has something to do with being under water and having painful wind, but unfortunately the only illustration is on the front cover. However, it is an excellent example of that little-celebrated genre, Cheap Weed Sale Item ...

WLW Reader

Research has shown that the average librarian will take 10 to 15 minutes to read this web page. Anecdotal evidence is suggesting that many librarians fear they do not have enough time to investigate the humor links. The majority of the 90+ original library humor items (all written by Biblia, and not available anywhere else on the 'net) in the Humor Index are designed to take less than 2 minutes to read.

However, if you choose to hang around there for hours reading them all, then re-reading them, then WLW cannot take any responsibility. You now have the choice of using the genetically unmodified Alphabetical Index or the dolphin-safe Dewey Version. Caffeine-free version has been temporarily canned, pending an FDA investigation ...
